Unpublished games

Tiny games made by the Butterscotch Bros, typically in under 48 hours!
Hi guys, longtime listener, first-time caller (I think) and what brought me here today is a search for an iOS version of Freeway Mutant. I've been playing it for ages on my Android-based mobile, and it struck me during a recent sit-down that it would be even better on the ol' iPad. Couldn't find it, thought it was an issue with the Canadian App Store, came here and found that it's no longer published. But it has to be out there... somewhere, right?

Same applies, now that I've seen the list, for Gerblins (love me some Gerblins) and Extreme Burger Defense. Old and weathered they may be, but I like 'em!

I, too, love those games!

In the end they were too much trouble to support, since they weren't part of our core portfolio and nobody was paying for them. After a few OS updates on Android and iOS made those games super unstable we decided that unpublishing them was the best move. I know a decent number of people who still have the Android versions on their phones, or who have found APKs on pirate sites to side load (though I wouldn't recommend taking that path, you never know what kind of horrible thing you'll end up downloading!). Since there's no way to side-load on iOS, that simply isn't an option!

We've talked about making APKs available via our own sites, but mostly just haven't gotten around to doing that. We should probably put those, along with all of our jam games, up on itch.io or something...

This is one of the reasons I don't like iOS devices. But my lady friend does, and so guess what kind of tablet we have...

I still have everything but Burger Defense and Gerblins on my phone, but that's not really an effective long-term solution. And you could argue that they're not meant to be long-term games, but I have yet to find a better two-minute time-killer than Freeway Mutant.

FWIW, I'd love to see (and would happily pay for) some kind of "Buttscotches: The Early Days" compendium of Minis, jam games, and whatever else is lying around. They may not be Crashlands-caliber games, but they're good for small doses of silly fun, I think they accurately reflect the "tone" of the studio, and as long as they're clearly marked as "this is the stuff we did before we knew what we were doing," I don't think there's any real risk that they're going to reflect poorly on you as developers. Hell, Extreme Burger Defense is worth at least two points in your favour based on the title alone.

(But I would also be happy to just get Freeway Mutant on the iPad.)

We've actually talked about doing exactly that! We were thinking of a "Butterscotch Arcade" (or similar) that would be a single app we could update with new jam games. We don't know what the pricing on it would be... probably a cheap pay-up-front that would give you access to all future games that go into it. Maybe that price would go up a tad with more games, so that those who get in early get the best deal... WHO KNOWS!

Seems good to me as I probably already wrote!

Otherwise there's the possibility of doing "sequels" of all those, but that would be a lot more work I guess.
