How do you salvage items?

I noticed the tip screen saying you can salvage things, but I haven't found out how to do so yet.

There's a pale yellow recycle icon on the top of the screen while you're looking at your inventory. Poke that then items in your inventory that can be recycled will show that icon as well: poke any items you want to salvage. Not every item can be salvaged, and there is no undo so poke with care!
